The oldest finding of persian ney instrument, which is believed to have been used in the Sumerian society since 5000 BC, is what remains on display at the University of Philadelphia Museum in America today, dating back to 3000-2800 BC. It is believed that the instrument was also used in religious ceremonies at that time.

Today, persian ney is referred to as Turkish instrument and has become a symbol of Sufi music. Instead of playing used for a musical instrument, the term blow for Persian Ney is used. Blowing here has a figurative meaning. It takes its source from the fact that Allah has blown the human spirit while creating man in Islam. Another factor that enables it to be affected by this metaphor is; "Tü" while playing the flute, "Fü" sounds for the side flute, such as "Hû" sound from the mouth while blowing.
