Classical kemence (in another name “armudî -pear-shaped- kemencha”) is a three-stringed, pear-shaped fiddle. Classical kemence has an interesting story: until the early 1900's it was actually a Greek folk music instrument from the Aegean Region and was associated to a lower social class and nightclubs. It transformed into a “classical” instrument after Tanburî Cemil Bey (a prominent Turkish composer and tanbur player in the Ottoman era) played and recorded kit solos. Now it is a highly regarded Turkish Classical Music instrument.
This instrument is very appropriate for the emotional and sad style of Turkish music with its melancholic and soul caressing sound. Classical kemence that we have in our catalogue are made of palm wood, they are all hand-made and of professional quality. Our Classical kemences are constructed by makers who have mastered their craft.
