About Persian Setar

Setar is one of the truest, most characteristic instruments of Persian traditional music. Setar is a small lute, played with a flat pick. It is like a western mandolin but with a longer neck. This instrument originally had three strings. However it has changed through time, now it has four strings and its frets vary between 22 to 28. Setar is played with the index finger’s long nail. When it is strummed, it gives the melody and drone together. Setar has a soft timbre but sometimes it can become loud and vigorous. Setar is divided into two according to the volume of the soundbox. Their voices are different, but the sounds of both are quite beautiful. Also, the setar is known as the instrument appealing to the listener's heart.

Tuning is a key factor for s instruments. Getting ready to play an instrument starts with tuning your instrument. It makes ready your instrument to get instruction.

In the Tar, the bottom pair strings( called white strings) are tuned in C. The middle pair of strings (known as yellow strings) are tuned in G. and the fifth and sixth strings from the bottom (called Zang and Bam, respectively) are tuned C. This is the same with Setar, with this difference that in the Setar the bottom and middle strings are single. In the Setar, the third string from the bottom is called Moshtagh. With this tuning, the names of the frets in the lower (Bam) string are the same as those of the white string(s).

Our setar is classified as standard, professional, and special setars depending on the needs of the musician. The setar in our catalog is made by the best setar makers who have mastered their craft.

Setar is exactly the same as on pictures and video
