Syrian ouds are part of the Arabic oud tradition. They are often chosen for their warm, full tone.
Syrian oud making includes the work of the Nahat family. Ouds have a short, fretless neck and a pear-shaped bowl. Dimensions, weight and construction vary between makers and models.
A common oud arrangement is six courses: five pairs of strings and one single bass string. The bass string extends the lower range; the fretless fingerboard allows the player to produce the intervals used in maqam music. The materials and dimensions of individual instruments vary.
For this ASO-108, the bowl and fingerboard are walnut, the soundboard is spruce and the tuning pegs are ebony.
