The CP-4 is our refined production fretless classical guitar, focused on tonewood selection and acoustic resonance with EQ pickup added for stage and recording. If you play fretless and care equally about plugged-in clarity and unplugged warmth, the CP-4 balances both.

Quick Recommendation — Buy the CP-4 for plug-in performance with strong unplugged acoustic projection. For pure stage focus, the CP-3 ($999) is identical in electronics but tuned slightly toward bright projection. For fretted microtonal at the same price, our KG ($799) uses fixed 24-tone equal temperament — easier to play, cheaper.

Why a fretless classical guitar exists

Fretless classical guitar is a Turkish innovation, attributed primarily to Erkan Oğur in the 1970s. Removing frets from a nylon-string classical body unlocks micro-pitch expression while preserving the warmth and sustain of the classical body — fundamentally different from a fretless bass or fretless electric. The CP-4 is built specifically for this idiom: nylon strings, classical body, oil-finished fingerboard for direct finger-string contact.

Best for

  • Established fretless players seeking a higher-quality main instrument than entry-level fretless guitars
  • Singers who use the guitar as an extension of vocal ornamentation
  • Producers and composers needing distinctive timbre for studio work
  • Players in the Anatolian fretless tradition working with oud, ney, or kemençe ensembles
  • Educators teaching microtonal expression and ear training

Not best for

  • Heavy strummers — fretless guitar rewards fingerstyle, not aggressive strumming
  • Players seeking precise pitch quantization (fretted models are easier)

FAQ

How is the CP-4 different from the CP-3 if they're the same price?

The CP-4 is voiced slightly warmer with extra attention to top selection and bracing for unplugged tone. The CP-3 is voiced slightly brighter for amplified projection. Both share the same EQ pickup system and rosewood fingerboard. Many fretless players keep both — one for studio, one for stage.

Is fretless harder than learning microtonal fretted?

Yes, considerably. Fretless requires both pitch decisions (which microtone) AND placement accuracy (exactly where on the fingerboard). Fretted microtonal only requires the pitch decision — placement is determined by the fret.

Can I use a slide on a fretless classical guitar?

Technically yes, but the nylon strings and unmarked fingerboard make traditional slide technique unconventional. Most fretless classical players use fingertip vibrato and sliding rather than glass or metal slides.

What's the lifespan of an oil-finished fingerboard?

Indefinite with light maintenance. Apply a light coat of lemon oil every 6–12 months. The oil finish allows direct fingertip-to-wood contact for the characteristic fretless feel.
