The Short Neck Mahogany Baglama Saz ASK-111P is the mahogany-bowl variant of our entry pro saz line — same 19-fret short-neck format as the ASK-150, but with mahogany instead of walnut for a slightly brighter, more cutting tone preferred by vocalists and ensemble players.

Quick Recommendation — Buy the ASK-111P if you want a short-neck saz with a brighter, more present tone that cuts through vocals and ensemble mixes. If you prefer warmer, rounder tone, the walnut ASK-150 ($269) is our default beginner pick at $20 more. For mahogany/maple two-tone hybrid, see CSS-123 ($249.99).

Mahogany vs walnut — what changes

Mahogany and walnut are both excellent saz tonewoods, but they color the sound differently. Walnut produces a warmer, rounder fundamental with thicker midrange — better for solo playing where you want the saz to fill the room. Mahogany is brighter, with more upper-harmonic content and faster attack — better when you're playing alongside vocals, percussion, or other instruments and need the saz to cut through. Neither is "better" — they suit different musical contexts.

Best for

  • Vocalists accompanying their own singing (mahogany cuts through vocals)
  • Ensemble players (Turkish folk groups, fasıl ensembles)
  • Players who prefer a brighter, more articulated tone
  • Recording artists wanting a defined saz sound in the mix
  • Beginners drawn to a slightly punchier instrument

Not best for

  • Solo players who want maximum warmth (choose walnut ASK-150)
  • Long-neck traditional repertoire (this is short-neck — choose ASL-202)
  • Live amplification (no factory pickup — see ASEL-104 or W2)

FAQ

Does mahogany hold up well over years?

Yes. Mahogany is stable across humidity ranges and ages beautifully — the tone often improves over the first 2-3 years as the wood settles. With basic care (humidity 40-55%, regular string changes) a mahogany saz lasts decades.

Is the saz hard to learn?

Moderately. The fretting system has microtonal koma intervals, and right-hand picking (mızrab/tezene) takes practice. Plan 6-12 months of daily practice to play folk songs comfortably.

Can I plug an acoustic saz into an amp?

Yes if your model has an AMP jack or built-in pickup. For acoustic-only sazs, a soundhole pickup can be installed by any luthier — but for stage use, a factory electric model gives cleaner signal.

How often do I change strings?

Casual practice: 4-6 months. Daily practice or performance: 6-12 weeks. The lower bass strings last longer than the high pairs.

Do you ship internationally?
